Decoding engine & self-test
What is CodePeek?
CodePeek is a free, privacy-first QR code and barcode reader. It scans with your camera or an uploaded image and explains, in plain language, exactly what a code contains — every scan is decoded entirely on your device, and nothing is ever sent to a server. It works in any modern browser and installs as an app on Android, iPhone and desktop, with offline scanning once installed.
What CodePeek reads
QR codes plus 1D barcodes (EAN-8/13, UPC-A/E, Code 39/93/128, ITF, Codabar, GS1 DataBar) and other 2D codes (Data Matrix, Aztec, PDF417).
What CodePeek tells you
- Links: the real domain you'd connect to, split from the rest of the path, with warnings for insecure or lookalike (punycode) addresses.
- Product barcodes: the number, a check-digit validity test, and the GS1 country/region prefix (with ISBN detection for books).
- Wi-Fi: network name, security type and password.
- Contacts, calendar events, email, phone, SMS, location and more, parsed into readable fields.
- Payment and authenticator codes are recognised and flagged so you know what you're looking at.
Your privacy
CodePeek never uploads your scans. Decoding happens entirely in your browser or app, even offline. Read the full privacy policy.
Frequently asked questions
Is CodePeek free to use?
Yes. CodePeek is completely free to use, with no sign-up or in-app purchases. A small ad may appear at the bottom of the page.
Do I need to install an app to scan a QR code?
No. CodePeek works straight in your browser — open this page and tap Scan with camera. You can also install it as an app on Android or iPhone for offline use and quicker access from your home screen.
Is it safe to scan QR codes with CodePeek?
Yes. CodePeek decodes everything on your device and never sends images or scanned content to a server, so there's nothing to intercept. It also shows you the real domain behind any link before you decide to open it, which helps you spot phishing or lookalike URLs.
Can I scan a QR code from a photo instead of using the camera?
Yes. Use Upload an image to analyse a screenshot or photo already on your device, or share an image into CodePeek from another app once it's installed.
What types of codes can CodePeek read?
QR codes and the common 1D product barcodes (EAN-8/13, UPC-A/E, Code 39/93/128, ITF, Codabar, GS1 DataBar), plus other 2D codes (Data Matrix, Aztec, PDF417).
Does CodePeek work without an internet connection?
Yes, once installed as an app it works fully offline — all decoding happens locally, so no connection is needed to scan or read a code.
